Post subject:  Watering my planties?

Hey everyone,

I'm learning slowly through trial and error that some of my veggies need much more water than others. I also keep hearing that some of my herbs don't need to be watered every day like I'm doing.

Does anyone know of any good resources on the watering subject? Should I not be watering everyday? Trying to work out a system to keep my garden from dying in this heat.

Thank you!

You cannot drown the plant just because it's hot. You should not be watering everyday unless it's in a pot. Deeply soak you plants at the root level then let them dry a bit before watering again. Before you water dig down about 4" and feel the moisture level in the soil. If it feel very moist, and the dirt sticks to your fingers then wait another day. You can overwater, even in this heat..and it will kill the plants just as underwatering can.

Thank you Sandi. I'm thinking that I am not watering deeply enough when I do. So more water but less watering maybe. I read that pumpkins/squash can fool you by looking "thirsty" because they can't absorb enough water in this heat to keep from wilting. Is that true with any other Vegetables/herbs?

I will check my soil for moisture from now on.

Thanks again,
Kat

Lots of things will droop in the mid-day heat, and that's very normal. It's a defense mechanism. They're trying to reduce the amount of energy used to stand erect and reduce the moisture loss. If they are drooping in the morning or early evening then check the soil. If they droop in the afternoon, don't worry about it, they'll perk up.
