Post subject:  Tasteless Squash

I am growing a few different kinds of squash. The plants are healthy and prolific. Of course the garden is all organic and we use good soil & compost. We have plenty of beautiful squash but it is tasteless. Same thing happened last season. I have tried a variety of seeds each time.

I'm not sure what you mean by tasteless. Although I like squash, once I've cooked it in olive oil with a little butter, added some onion, and lightly salted and peppered it, it seems to me that it never has much taste. My husband observed -- and I agree with him -- that it seems to sweeten up some as it's cooked slowly for 15-20 minutes but, beyond that, I wouldn't have classified it as a vegetable that has a strong "flavor".

That said, maybe I'm just a squash-know-nothing  and maybe squash is supposed to have some kind of strong flavor. Have you had squash that had more taste than what you can buy at the store? Our squash, from a 100% organic garden, doesn't taste any different to me from squash I could buy at Whole Foods.

I'm definitely not taking issue with your concern (and, I assume, frustration), I'm just trying to understand. Tomatoes I would classify as having flavor. Some are sweet, with a bit of tang, and may even be a bit spicy. Compare one like that to a completely tasteless store-bought tomato that has no sweetness, no tang, no "zip", and just tastes watery and bland.

Is that you mean? Have you had flavorful squash? Where did you get? Did you grow it?

Interested in learning more...

My husband and I both recollect that growing up squash had more flavor (on its own) than it has now. We generally eat our veggies without a lot of toppings and everything we grow except the squash has flavor. Every now and then it will have a lot of flavor but it's rare.

Hmmm... I wonder, since you mention that it was as you were "growing up" if the squash is just missing one crucial ingredient.

My mom used to fix "eggy eggies" on mornings when she wanted to give me something special for breakfast. It was just an over-easy egg on a piece of toast that she cut all up together and then salted and peppered it.

I've tried -- many times -- to make eggy eggies but they just don't taste the same.

Maybe the way each of your mothers prepared the squash for your families is what is missing, and that crucial ingredient that mothers put in so well -- love. :D

Now that I've waxed sentimental, it could also be all the genetic modification that's taking place. A huge percentage of the world's food (and seed) supply is already affected. That could be the culprit.
