Post subject:  Seed Starter?

Back in high school I took a horticulture class where we started from seed all manner of plants (ornamentals, vegetables, etc.). The medium we used to grow the plants was a mixture of peat-based potting soil, vermiculite, and pearlite. To start the seeds we used basically this same mix, maybe adding a little more vermiculite and pearlite.

Now I'm following the organic program for my lawn, flower beds, and vegetable garden. I'd like to do the same for some seeds I'm about to start. So I'm wondering: what is the best medium in which to start seeds? 100% compost? A mix of compost and something else?

And what about the "potting soil" for my pots? Does a 50/50 mixture of dirt and compost sound about right?

Rabbit Hill Farms makes a great seed starter. I have sometimes used half "typical" potting soil and compost but I sift the compost with an old flour sifter. What ever you do, finely sift compost that you use. When I didn't it make a big mess more than anything!
