I have decided to go heirloom. I live in San Antonio. Does anybody know any reliable mail order sources for heirloom seeds and plants? Also, I have never order a plant by mail - does that really work? Thanks. I am a new member!

I'm going to do the same thing with the garden I'll be building shortly. I haven't ordered any previously, but I have a site I plan to try: http://www.heirloomseeds.com/. If somebody has some negative [or positive] comments on this company I'd love to hear them.

I have ordered plants by mail in the past, and have always been happy with the results, although I'm sure it depends upon the company with which you're doing business.

One of my favorites is seedsavers.org. They have lots of info and sources for heirloom seed. Baker Creek seed is also another good source.

i have used heirloomseeds.com and baker creek for 4 years now and they have never let me down as far as seeds go....as far as plants..i grow all of my own from seed, so no input there

if you guys want to check and see if an organization has a good reputation for their products you can always go to the Dave's Garden website and check out the watchdog section, which has saved me many times from making a potential bad purchase.

I ordered several packets from Victory Seeds this year. www.victoryseeds.com Also, check out www.bulkherbstore.com for a set of heirloom seeds called Mama Pearl's Garden Collection. It is $89.95 for 40 different seed packs. Just starting with heirloom seeds myself this year.

Find out wich veriaties you want, then just go to the store. I noticed most seeds now won't tell you if its old school heirloom or not, but I always see them mixed together at the big chains as well.
