Post subject:  When are cucumbers ready to pick?

I am growing cucumbers for the first time. I have some that are the size of a large pickle and they have a spiky fur on them. How big should I let them get before picking? Thanks

It sounds like yours aren't ready to pick yet, but....Do you know what variety they are? Some cucumbers are pickle size, and others (like Straight Eight) are slicing size. Then, there are English cucumbers which are another matter. If they start to get very smooth and yellow, they are probably over-mature whatever the variety.

Thank you for your prompt reply wormrancher! The package that the seeds came in just says, "Cucumber Poinsett 76". I don't know if that is meaningful information.

It's a slicer, pick at 6-8 inches, pick in the morning, and pick often to allow plants to redirect energy to producing more fruit.

Slice, add onion slices, vinegar, water, TBSP of sugar, salt and pepper. Refrigerate and Let sit several hours, devour :D .

ziziki dip is also very tasty made with homegrown cucumbers and warm pita bread.

Enjoy and Happy Gardening!

Will the little sharp hairs on the cucumbers go away?
