Post subject:  Dividing monkeygrass or lariope

I have lined my front walkway with lariope. It was planted about 5 years ago, six to nine inches apart as recommended. Under the organic program, it has done very well, and now needs to be thinned out.

How do I go about doing this? Thanks.

It's quite easy. Cut it back to the ground where you want it thinned out. Then dig out there where you don't want it.

Like you said... it does quite well. In a couple of years you will repeat.

Post subject:  Liriope thinning & trimming

If you want to trim the outsides, just take a shovel and dig out the ones you want to remove or relocate, then put in some compost mix and mulch to fill the gap in the soil. Same goes for thinning - Dig out in between the plants you want to keep and then fill in with compost mix and mulch. Liriope is very hardy and difficult to kill, even when you want to. digging it out is the only truly successful method I've ever seen.
