My daughters front bed has a row of boxwoods that are slowly turning yellow and then dying back. She has already pull out several of them and replaced some. We did a soil test for this issue and the recomendation was for adding some gypsum because of the possiblility of a clay pan under the plantings, Area: Missouri City near Sugar Land Tx (south Houston). Sienna Plantation is the subdivision name. The roses and lantana are all doing just fine (same bed). lillies are happy too ! The bed has a mister water irrigation system which is currently off for the winter. She been trying to follow organic techniques, but doesn't know the history of the previous owners care. she plans to add some organic fertilizer. I encouraged her to get some Garrett juice plus and a sprayer and start a regular monthly spray routine. Bed Layout: boxwoods in front, knockout Roses next, then some lantana with lillies on the perimeter. wondered if spraying hydrogen peroxide might help. also saw the baking soda letter today and wondered if that would also help. the only other thing might be a bit of corn meal applied to the area for additional fungal control. would like some advise please. thanks.. are they being soaked weekly (deep watering) after being planted? A misting system is not going to be a deep enough, root-soaking water, that shrubs need to get established. Also, water in some seaweed to help with root growth. Sounds like they're dying of thirst. |

thanks for the reply. the die off happens whether it's dry or wet. It is slow. you see a small bit of yellow leaves and then soon that branch is dead. and so it continues until the plant is dead. all the while its neighbor is healthy and beautiful !! ??? Also there are K O roses that are doing very well in the same bed along with very happy lillies (easter leftovers) and lantana. so I would think that there would be more boxwood affected by a lack of water, rather than part of a plant or just one plant at a time. thanks again for your input........pat |

Could you post a photo of the bed, one giving a look at the whole area, then some looking at parts of the boxwood - the healthy vs yellow leaves, the branches, etc.? And a photo of the soil beneath the plants? You'll see in this thread that beneath the message body box is a green line with orange text "upload attachment." You can upload directly (I would suggest reducing the photo to about 1000 pixels wide or it takes over the entire screen when it loads) or you can put it on a photo hosting site like Flickr or Photobucket and post a link to your photo to either be viewed in the body of your post or to be viewed by clicking on the link and navigating to the photo page.
