A neighbor was throwing away 2 shrubs. They were pulled up by roots and are not dead. I have not been able to identify it yet. It is evergreen and small leaves. There was very little dirt left on roots. The size of bushes is approx. 2 ft. tall and 1 ft wide.
I have heard Howard talk about how important it is to transplant shrubs and trees in the original soil. I am wondering if I am going to be able to keep these alive and what is the best way to plant them since I do not have any of the original soil?
Thanks for any suggestions! :D

He means native soil. Just get them in the ground asap or the roots will dry out and they'll die. Dig a hole slightly wider but only as deep as the roots. Plant and backfill with your native soil. Saturate the rootball then fertilize very well with an organic fertilizer or root stimulator. Fertilize once a month and saturate the root ball by hand watering once a week.
