It's small. The flower head is less than 1" tall. It's a volunteer plant, growing in the shade without irrigation. It has grass-like vegetation 4-6" high. Location is southwest Arlington. Is it a native? Annual or perennial?

You have grape hyacinth. Take a look at this: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/692/ I don't know if it's a Texas native, but it is a perennial. Hope that helps. Happy gardening! |

Thank you both for your relies. I am in the (long) process of converting my property to plants native to north central Texas. The grape hyacinths are beautiful. I was disappointed to learn that they are not Texans. I have very little lawn left, but the wildlife has exploded. |

I love the little grape hyacinths that pop up around my yard every sprint. As far as I can tell they do no harm, and even if you dig up their little onion-like bulbs, you'll always miss a few, so they'll be back! They may not be native, but they are very well-adapted. Good for xeriscape planting. You're better off enjoying them when they bloom then mowing them or cutting the leaves out of the garden. I just leave them there and work around them, but if I need to, I dig them up and drop them somewhere else. They're about as tough as iris in that they're really tolerant of abuse and hard to kill. |
