I have read that vinegar is an effective weed killer. Will it also prevent new weeds from sprouting? Thanks.

It kills weeds/grass etc when sprayed directly on it, so it's not something that you would use in a large area that would prevent new weeds or grass from sprouting...unless your aim is to kill everything in that area.

Thanks for the info. We live in Vegas with desert landscaping. This year, with the heavy rains, we have tons of weeds, most of which I have hand picked. But ---I hate having to re-weed and re-weed. Is there anything besides Preen or Roundup that will prevent weeds in the first place? Thanks

There's a lady I know who every time she pulls out a weed she fills up the hole with a vinegar and water mix and she has one of those turkey baseters to apply it down into the root hole. This seems to work for her.

Vinegar will kill the green growth, it doesn't kill the roots, but if you hit a plant a couple of times (do it on a warm sunny day) over the course of a few days, that usually kills off most weeds.

If you're in the desert hitting succulent plants with vinegar you might not get the same result. I've hit my cactus with vinegar when I was trying to spray the grass around it and it doesn't seem to harm the cactus (though I wasn't drenching the cacti, just a little side spray). So the answer probably depends on what kinds of weeds you have.

This time of year, it seems like just about everything in the desert has a flower. So wait until the bloom has finished and enjoy the show, then get rid of the weed.

I'd say spraying on a hot as hell day gives the best results, based on my past experiences. The heat and direct sunlight knock the weeds down quickly once you drench them with the enhanced vinegar solution.

I agree. Hot weather really speeds the weed killing power of vinegar.
