Post subject:  Vinegar Citrus Mix for weeds?

I am thinking of making up a vinegar citrus/orange peel juice mix to spot spray and control/beat down weeds which may be in progress in my yard. I saw somewhere that a 20% vinegar mixed with some orange peel juice works very well. I was wondering if any of you had any information on that subject and if so what would my mixing ratios need to be and where does one get orange peel juice?

Thank you,
JR

Post subject:  WEED KILLER

You don't necessarily need 20% vinegar to kill weeds, especially if you're adding in "organge peel juice", which is more commonly referred to as orange oil and is produced by several manufacturers - Medina comes to mind first. Orange oil still has the natural oils from the peels and is ideal for use outside the home, as a soil amendment or for killing weeds. It is also a solvent and degreaser so you must use it properly.

When the "juice" is further concentrated and the natural oils are removed, it becomes the basic compound d-limonene. This is a powerful substance, a solvent & degreaser, that will melt plastic, paint and other synthetic materials. Literally. It's also a terrific cleaner and odor remover when dliluted and used for home use. There are two brand names you will see it sold under in Texas; That Orange Stuff and Orange TKO.

So, 10% vinegar with d-limonene or orange oil would make one heck of a natural acid combination for spraying. In my personal experience, it will burn a weed down to the ground in full sun on an 85 degree day in less than 2 hours. On a hot day, 95 degrees or hotter, it won't even take that long. But it only kills the green part, not the roots, so to completely get rid of them you'd have to spray more than once, until they deplete their root resource and can't grow back anymore.

Good luck and I hope that helps!

No sweat, newbie! 8) How the heck do you think we learned??

Hey, I forgot to add the part about a surfactant, like liquid soap.
Just a drop in a gallon of water does the trick to help it stick to the weeds and burn 'em down. Woo-hoo!

Just wait until you try it. It's so cool! I have convinced more friends of the value of organic/natural methods using that stuff. Blows 'em outta their shoes!

Post subject:  Newbie with an Organiphobe husband

Hello! I'm a newbie to the Ground Crew, but have been listening to DirtDoctor for a while. Have several of his books and have been downloadng the MP3 files so I can listen to the programs on my way to work every morning since I can't listen on Sunday. I love studying the books and there's something very calming about Howard's voice.

Anyway, I bought several products this spring - CGM, compost, 10% vinegar, TKO, Garrett Juice, all with the intention of treating my poor yard to something really special this year. I put the CGM down too late to act as a preemergent, so unfortunately I have the prettiest weeds in the neighborhood. My husband is very sceptical and his first instinct is to run out and buy Weed & Feed. I told him OK this year, but I fully intend to apply my compost, CGM, spray with Garrett Juice once a month and spray weeds that the W&F doesn't kill with the Vinegar recipe in Howard's books. I also saw on the Soil's Alive website that they use a diluted spray when the yards are dormant to treat weeds and not damage the grass too much. If I do that with the vinegar recipe, will it work and not kill all of my grass off?

What I need is some assurance from the rest of the Crew that by this time next year, I should have a better looking lawn if I stick to my guns and follow the program set out in the DD Organic Manual.

Post subject:  It does great!

We use one gallon of 10% Vinegar, 1 ounce of orange oil and 1 once of ivory dish soap. (1 ounce means a squeeze or so). The hotter the weather, the quicker the action. The orange oil takes a bite out of the vinegar smell, too.
