Post subject:  Spraying during fall and winter

The grass around one of my crepe myrtles has been turning brown already while the rest of the yard is still colorfully green. I have been putting compost in the area for about a month now, and it doesn't seem to have helped yet.
Is it possible to start a sraying program using Medina Soli Activator now?
What else would you recommend?

Hi Rick,
You can spray or apply organic lawn care materials any day of the year. What kind of grass do you have? Is the grass turning brown anywhere else, like under any other bushes? I'm thinking the tree roots are taking up the moisture that the grass would ordinarily get.

How much compost have you applied?
What else have you applied?

Post subject:  Winter spraying!?

In a 20 X 20 area I have spread 2 wheel barrows of home compost materials and 6 loads of cotton-burd compost. I have also spread organic fertilizer in October.
There is a sprinkler head at the corner of the 20 X 20 square.
I have foliar fed the "red tips" in the area, but not the grass so far.
That's my question, and I think you answered that I can spray during the winter. I will start soon, as soon as the wind dies a little.
Thanks,
Rick

That does not seem like too much compost for 400 square feet when spread out over several weeks. I was thinking you might have smothered the grass. A little compost goes a long way. After you apply you should use a push broom to sweep the compost off the leaves of the grass plants. They should all be sticking up when you are finished.

It could be the timing in the year that you applied the compost was not one where you would expect to see much improvement; however, turning brown early doesn't seem right. I'll be interested in how it looks in April 2009 when the spring flush hits. I'm sure you'll hit it hard with the Medina whether you mean to or not.
