Post subject:  Lawn aeration

I have a fairly new Bermuda lawn (planted last fall sometime). I was wondering given the current drought watering restrictions if it would be beneficial to have the lawn mechanically aerated? We can only water once per week now (no biggie to me). My theory is that the soil is somewhat compacted due to the new home construction last fall. If the lawn were aerated, I think it would help loosen the soil, allow oxygen to penetrate, and most importantly, allow deeper & heavier watering.

Am I on the right track here? I can rent an aerator for $60 which is OK, but don't want to go to the trouble if the lawn will not benefit significantly.

Thanks,
Kevin

Are there no opinions on this or are my assumptions just right?

Thanks,

I think the condition you've described would benefit from aeration. My suggestion would be to spread a light layer of compost and/or lava sand over the entire yard and rake it so the holes fill up.

Thanks Tony. I was planning to spread some lava sand after I aerated.
