Post subject:  New law leveling

We have a new home and lawn beginning it's second year. The ground is not very level and needs something to level out a very uneven dirt base.
Our yard man suggested cushion sand since it will filter into the low spots and will not contain nutgrass and other weeds like sandy loam would.

Is this a good idea? Other suggestions?

Do you have (1) a few definite high spots and low spots or do you have (2) lots of lumpy ground across, say, 2 feet?

1. For the first problem, I would rent a core aerator and run it only in the high places. Then sweep or rake the removed cores to the low spots. Repeat this as often as necessary to transfer soil from a high spot to a low spot.

2. For this problem I would use sand. Actually I have a low spot now that I'm using used kitty litter to build up. I need to wait until the grass fills in this spring before I know if this is working. If you use kitty litter be absolutely sure there is no baking soda in it. Baking soda has its place in organic gardening but general broadcast across the lawn is NOT it!
