Post subject:  Organic lawn fertilizer and top dressing as an amendment

Hej all- I live in Colorado Zone 5 and found this cool website through organic gardening.com. I've been gardening organically for many years but I have always struggled trying to make my lawn (kentucky blue) look nice.

I amended the soil in the back yard with compost prior to putting down sod and that lawn does pretty well. However, the front lawn was put down by the developer on top of my nemesis ---Colorado bentonite clay.

I've been contemplating top dressing after aerating this spring but not sure what to top dress with and if it is even recommended? Due to the "soil" I have, water doesn't soak in very well and it is a struggle to make the lawn do anything, although it doesn't seem to need as many mowings as the backyard does. :)

I also am looking for an organic alternative for a fertilizer for my lawn. Established about 2 1/2 years.

Any suggestions and comments would be appreciated.

thanks, John

Read the FAQs at the top of the forum and see if you still have any questions. Bentonite should make a great base once you get the organic matter working for you.
