I don't have a compost pile yet so I've been shopping for bagged compost to put on my SA lawn but they are too expensive for my budget. A local HEB grocery store sells a bagged compost. It caught my eye because it's only $1.58 for a 1 cu. ft. bag. My concerns are it's only $1.58 per bag. It's made by Texas Organic Products. The listed ingredients are hardwood and manure. I couldn't find it on the acceptable or unacceptable organic products list.

Does anybody have any insight on this product?

GMARK, I am not familiar with that specific product, doesn't mean it isn't a viable product. I will say that I have used this product for years and have been very satisfied and it seems to be available from multiple outlets in my area. Should you wish to try something else.

Thanks Mr. Clean,

BTN cotton burr seems to be a popular choice, but the cheapest I can find is about $7.00 a bag non acidified or $8.00 a bag for acidified. I have 7,000 sq. ft. of lawn and I just can't afford it. I'm going to stay away from the $1.58 per bag stuff. Seems to good to be true. Just curious, can anybody tell me what's the difference in acidified and non acidified? The nursery couldn't tell me.

I did find a commercial landscape material supplier who sells to the general public and they have compost. How do I know if they are selling a quality compost?

Any and all suggestions appreciated.

I just bought 3 bags for some beds and can't find my receipt, but that price seems high. FWIW I don't use the acidified version.

Its about $7 per back here in fort worth. If I were you I would search around for a place that sells compost by the yard-MUCH cheaper than bagged and you can still find some good quality stuff. I cant immagine it not being available in your area. In Fort Worth I can think of at least 10 places in a 20 mile radius. I wouldnt buy the cheap bagged stuff at HEB.

I'm not having much luck finding places that sell bulk
compost. I did find out that the commercial landscape
material company uses native tree trimmings, grasses,
weeds, cattle manure and "gin trash" from the local
cotton gins. I'm pretty sure that the local cotton was
grown using synthetic fertilizers, herbicides and
pesticides. Am I correct in assuming that this compost
would not fall in the organic program guidelines?

Thanks to all for the past and future replies.

Hey Gmark why not try Craigslist under farm and garden, you might find someone in your area that has extra compost their willing to give away or sell, other than that start building a pile now and by the end of the year you should have a small amount. 8)

Thanks everyone, I had already tried craigs list and didn't have any luck. I bought the bagged BTN cotton burr compost. I couldn't wait any longer. The grey leaf spot is taking over my whole front yard and nothing else I've done is working.

I read the link to BTN's website again that Mr. Clean mentioned. It says that if chemicals were used on the cotton that it would "cook out" during the decompossig process.

The place that sells the bulk compost is about 20 miles away. By the time I factor in the gas to get there and back I can by the bagged stuff for about the same price.

Thanks for all the replies.
