I work in an automobile dealership and we've found a use for moth balls that I think even Howard would say is OK.
We find a lot of vehicles that have rat & squirrel damage to the wiring under the hood. If you would place some moth balls in cloth sacks and tie them around under the hood, it will repel them. Just be sure to keep them away from any moving parts under there.

Well, I guess since they're under the hood with all that other stuff they aren't much making things worse...except for the rats and squirrels. I guess you shouldn't have any snakes, either...

Man, don't you guys feed them out there? :D

 I beg to differ. Mothballs are something you do not want to touch or even breath the fumes from :o . I believe Howard would agree with me on this one, too. When the engine (or outside temperature) gets hot, those fumes are escaping. Why not try predator urine to deter the critters?

I was told that mothballs would keep the rabbits out of my flower garden so I ignorantly put them there as well as around a few tomato and pepper plants that I am growing. Question: Space where vegetables are is small. It is 15 feet long by 4 1/2 for half of it and 3 1/2 for the rest of it. I placed about 15 mothballs there before I realized that it wasn't at all a good idea. I threw out about 10 of them which were now half the size as when I put them out. Are the vegetables edible? Will they be toxic? Have I ruined the soil forever?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. My e-mail address: lcfish45@aol.com

Thank you.

Jim - don't think I can buy into that. The fumes of moth balls are the most dangerous part. Seem as if they would get in the car.
