I am having a very rough time getting rid of blackspot on my roses. I propagate most of my plants and blackspot has made it impossible to propagate them. Can anyone recommend some organic methods. Any information will be appreciated. Dee

I have found, over years of experimentation, that mixing horticultural cornmeal into the soil at the base of your plants will eliminate blackspot and bring the roses back to health within just a few days. You don't have to use horticultural cornmeal, any plain ground cornmeal will do, but the horticultural works best. If you have recently used a conventional fungicide, you will still get a positive result but it will take longer. I had results within 24 hours in more than one case.

Take 1 cup of cornmeal per foot of height of your plant, meaning a three foot tall plant would like 3 cups of cornmeal, etc. but I have never used more than 4 cups and that was for a large bush. Pull back the mulch around the base of the plant and sprinkle the cornmeal around. Work the cornmeal into the soil at the base of the plant, water in and you will see results very quickly. After you use this method, any application of fungicide other than neem or potassium bicarbonate will negate the beneficial effects and return your plant to poor health. You will also see benefits if you also mix some compost into your soil and make sure the base has not become buried too deeply if the plant has been there a long time. Also, cut back on your watering gradually and you should see a permanent improvement.

The organic rose program on this site is excellent and I recommend you adopt it. You will have beautiful, fragrant roses, healthy plants and you won't have to work nearly as hard to keep them that way.

By the way, any other plants you use this on will respond positively. Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Thank you for the information on the black spot. I have already tried the cornmeal with minimal results. :( I think they may be infected to bad for the cornmeal to be a help. I am open to anymore ideas you might have. Thanks again. Dee

Try the link above for additional info. on corn meal juice to spray on the plants. Neem should also control black spot.

Sorry you are having so much trouble. Are these hybrid roses, antiques? With what I can glean, the biggest issue here is wet feet. Roses don't like their feet wet all the time. Are they in pots or the ground?

Lots of finished compost and less water are what they will need. The compost will reintroduce nutrients and biological activity to your soil and less water will allow them more oxygen. Work the soil loose around their roots, and if you don't have a good mulch over their feet, add 2-3 inches of good shredded cedar mulch.

The organic rose program is your first line of defense. Following that and monitoring your watering program will bring you success. Good luck. Roses are so beautiful, I always hate to hear of them being sick!

Hope this helps! :D

Thank you for the information. I will try to follow your advice as close as I can. I love my roses and enjoy propagating them for resale. By the way they are miniature and hybrid teas along with a few old fashion.

Oh, I LOVE the little roses! I have one that has been a treasured gift for many, many years. It's least favorite condition is wet feet. It always gets mad when I don't take care to keep its feet dry.

One thing I learned to do with my mini's planted in soil is to work the soil around the roots and add some compost when they get looking unhappy. Moving the soil around makes them much happier and they begin to look and behave better right away. I only do that once a year and that seems to be plenty for them. They stay happy until the next year.

Let us know how your pretty babies are doing. They are such a joy!

Hi Kathe

I am hooked on the minis but I also enjoy the old fashion roses. If you want you can email me @ deeskitchen2000@yahoo.com. I think we have a mutual interest in roses and I also grow and use herbs for culinary and medicinal purposes. I would enjoy visiting with you on the email. I am looking forward to hearing from you.
