Post subject:  cocoa mulch

Having moved to Hershey, PA from Dallas recently, cocoa mulch is all over the place up here. I know it's bad if you have pets b/c it can kill them, but is it beneficial to the compost pile in any way?

Anything that was once alive is good for the compost pile. If you want the process to be faster, have a good mix of nitrogen (kitchen scraps, weeds, green stuff) and carbon (molasses, fallen leaves, brown stuff). It is good if you have various smaller size pieces. Invest in a thermometer ($20-$30 for one with a long probe) to make sure it gets hot enough to kill those weed seeds!
