hey everybody this is my first post, and i was just wonderin if anyone had a link to page or maybe a book theyve read where i can find the micro and macro nutrients for all compostable materials, so i can make sure i have all trace minerals because i read that compost is lacking in those, and i would like to make some that has everything in it so i dont have to buy more nutrients or soil just compost/yard dirt and some perlite ( also im new to composting) |

Browse the forums here, search on "compost" or "micro-nutrients," etc. Visit the library (link is in the center of the main page). There is a lot of information available, and it would do well to acquaint yourself with what is aleady here, then ask questions about the particulars that weren't answered in your research. |

i have done a ton of searchin, i did find one list but it only had npk and i need trace minerals, i found some info here and there, just wondered if anyone had an organized list i could copy and paste lol/ but anyway i was wondering if i just looked up there nutrient/mineral content before composting, could i get a feel for what it would do for the compost? |

What are you growing that trace minerals are crucial to? Have you had your soil tested? |

i plan on growing a few different kinds of plants and even though they arent needed as much, dont all plants require all the minerals? maybe theyll grow, but they wont thrive, basicly i just wanted to have every needed nutrient in my compost so i could just mix it with some garden dirt and perlite because im kinda strapped for cash,,,, but i was thinkin eggshells are basicly all calcium, which is what it it converts into in compost, same thing with bananas, high in potassium, same thing with compost so if i look up the nutrient content before composted, will it be close or similair |

What you need first is healthy soil and good biological activity in that soil. If you start by doing the bed preparation, use soil amendments (lava sand, greensand, decomposed granite, etc.) and dry molasses along with compost tea, then applying beneficial nematodes, you'll have a good start. If you have a soil test done you'll know if there is something missing and need to add to it. Egg shells, coffee grounds, lots of things can go into the garden. If you have down limbs and branches or trees on or near your property, getting wood chips from those local trees is the best mulch. If your yard or garden area hasn't had any cultivation activity for a while (i.e., is just a grassy area) then it is probably good to go, unless you're in a particular soil type that needs a boost. If it has excess amounts of harmful chemicals, then you would need to detox. I'd suggest that unless you have a reason to believe the latter, that you proceed with amending the soil and see what grows. |
