| Post subject: | composting poisonous plant? |
I would like to know if you can compost poisonous plants if you are a homeowner growing organically? I have yew pine, privet,honeysuckle and canna leaves and I have been throwing these in the trash because I read not to compost them. I looked all over the web to see if yew pine was poisonous but was unable to find the answer to this question. I appreciate your help in answering this question. |

I put canna in my compost all of the time. The things with woody branches go on the top or side for a while so the leaves can fall off, and if it is too woody (I don't have a chipper) I toss the limbs later. I'm working on getting a chipper from a friend who is moving, though, so that will solve that problem! Anyway, something that is toxic to eat as itself isn't going to make the compost toxic. By the time it all breaks down, it's just good compost. I wouldn't put poison ivy in the compost, because I won't go near it if I can avoid it and I don't want to come into contact with it before it has broken down. Just about anything else can go in there, at least in my yard. YMMV. |
