| Post subject: | What to Compost |
First off, my main goal of composting is to reduce trash that would go to the dump. So, here is what I comost: everything that is from an organic source. In my household, that means most waste, except plastic and metal. Most of the items on a commmon list of "What not to compost," I do daily. Such as: meat, cheese, milk, bones, fish, etc. There not packs of rats living in the pile, nor an offensive smell. I use basic compost methods. I do not turn the pile. I layer it, when needed, with a cover material, such as grass or leaves. Between composting, and recycling, I generate so little household waste, that I have considered cancelling my trash service. |

I compost food from the kitchen by first putting it in a temporary bin beside the house. To keep the dogs out of the compost when I need to empty the bin I collect the dog droppings from a week or two in a 5 gal bucket, fill it with enough water to cover the droppings, and let it sit for a while. When I'm ready to dump my compost bin into the big compost in the back yard I dig an opening in the top with a spade fork, pour in the goop from the bin, cover it over with material from the pile, and then I pour the dog-dropping tea over the top of the entire thing. They aren't interested in it AT ALL It works like a charm. |

You can look all over the net and see everybody's list on what and what not to put in your pile. I have had my pile for over 20 years now and I use mainly grass in the summer and leaves in the fall/winter(fall/winter come late in Texas), and I also put kitchen sraps in which include,old cereal,stale food,moldy food(that hides in the fridge),moldy bread,old spices,old flour/sugar,and bills/paper thru a shreder,coffee grounds and produce scrap ,and water. Turn pile about once a month and water it with a spinkler and just let nature do her thing. PS- but the book "Let it Rot",read it and try using what you red. |

PhilB, we have done much the same. If it'll rot and it's not too salty, chances are good it will go in the compost. Not every crumb, mind, but mostly everything, including some dairy and some meat. We've had no problems. Composting has become a way of life for us. With our composting, we have reduced our garbage output down to 1/2 of what it was, and it seems to be still shrinking, but the worms go on multiplying and producing compost for the garden. |
