Post subject:  Coffee filters and newspaper

Okay, me again! :D Hope ya'll are having a good weekend! I know that I can use coffee grounds in my pile as a nitrogen source but what do I do with the filters? Are they useable? I use the unbleached filters from Melita. Also - in an earlier post someone mentioned that you can use your lawnmower to go over newspaper to shred it up and put it in the pile. This is a stupid ? I know but how? Do I just throw the paper out there on the ground or do I need to wad it up first or tear it into smaller sections?

Happy Composting!
Nina

Nina - the paper filters you use are great for composting...they are wood pulp, after all - and since you use the unbleached ones, they are even better. I also use coffee filters, and you can throw used tea bags into the compost heap as well.
As for the newspaper, I supposed you can just put it on the ground whole and run the mower over it. I use the mower on my fallen leaves to chop them up for the compost pile. I don't think you would have to tear them up more - let the mower do the work!

Thanks very much for your reply! This is great news for me. :D I'm even happier knowing that I can use my tea bags, too! Happy dance! Oh, and for certain I am going to let the lawn mower do the work - I'm off to mow down about two months worth of newspaper. Fun! Fun!
Have a great weekend!

If you soak the newspaper for a few hours you should not have to shread it. Of course you need to keep the pile damp all the time anyway. If you let the papers dry out, you might wish you had shredded them.

Down here they compost whole telephone books that have been soaked.
