I have an organic garden in my backyard. My dog lives in the backyard. I like having him around when I am working outside because he lets me know if anyone approaches or enter the front or back of the property which makes me feel safer. However, I had a bacteria ulcer last year and researching the ulcer I learned that it could have been from contact with dog poop and that it takes over 200 days for the bacteria to decompose and be considered safe. Although I have not intentionally put poop in my compost, I am sure decomposing poop has been scooped into the bin. Since reading that information I have not put leaves or grass from my backyard in the composter and I am careful to wear gloves at all times when working in the yard. I have a large yard with a lot of yard waste that could be composted, should I be concerned?

Go on You Tube and find dog poop composters ,it's real easy to make your own,or you can buy one at Petsmart or Petco, but they run about$50-$75. :?

If you leave the poop along for several days, what happens? In my yard it is first visited by flies, then by tiny insects and pill bugs, and then nothing. On day 3 the pile becomes an amorphous mass and on day 4 it has completely melted down under the grass and disappears. I can also say that on day 3 if you step on it, it no longer sticks to your shoes. That was a delightful discovery.

Dog poop does not cause bacteria. It is teeming with bacteria from the gut of the dog. Organic gardening would be the best defense to animal dung of any kind. The reprocessing of the dung by insects and those same bacteria are what makes it safe for humans to be around.
