Hey any of you guys buy worms to put in your outside piles?
i'm thinking about buying about a 1000 of them in about a week. 8)

No, I haven't but I thought about it when I got started. I'm glad I didn't though because in no time it was full of them. Spending even a few bucks on a pile of rot just feels wrong to me.

If your pile is on the bare ground it won't take long for them to find it on their own.

Ditto the last response. I thought about it, but chose not to. They definately found their way to the pile on their own and quickly multiplied. There are so many huge wiggly earthworms in there now that the birds sit around the outside and wait for one of the worms to stick its little head (or butt) up in the air. The kids get a kick out of it.

Those are your deep burrowing earthworms helping out there--aren't they great! If you want to make vermicompost, which is a wonderful soil amendment, you will want a worm bin and red wiggler composting worms. Your kids will really love watching those :D .
