I remember reading an account by a missonary to Africa that mentioned in passing that he used the electricity from the coil wire on his Land Rover (at least I guess it was a Land Rover) to treat snake bites. The article wasn't about that in particular, so it didn't give details. I assume that the voltage output of car coils of that era wasn't as high as it probably is today, so it might not have been a severe jolt.

As for a substitute for the actual "Venom-X" product, I think a stun gun is a bit extreme (extreme situations might call for extreme measures, though). It seems to me that an electric cattle prod might work as well and would not be as severe as a stun gun. I've seen prods small enough to be easily portable. I don't know if the electrode span is as tight as the VX, but one would think it would be adequate if it delivers a local jolt. I also don't know if the voltage is appropriate or how much it allegedly takes to denature venom. If it worked, that might be the only legitimate use for those devices.

As for regulatory safety concerns about Venom-X type products, I would imagine that it has the potential to be deadly if used on a person with a cardiac condition. I also imagine that a stout envenomation would be a bit rough on a cardiac patient. Nonetheless, I doubt if we'll see Dick Cheney using one for kicks.

The voltage of a average ignition coil is about 45kV. It has not increased appreciably in the last 50 years. I have been "bit" by a ignition coil several times and why I didn't enjoy it there was nothing crippling about it. Just a sharp buzz.

I would think that a low amperage capacitor would have the same effect, but you would have to recharge it everytime (PITA).

If you've read the first post in this thread you can understand the cloud that surrounds this product. So if you talk with him please keep that in mind.
The guy's name is Cliff Mackey and his phone number is 918-341-6715. The price is $63.50. You send the money to PO Box 123 in Claremore, Oklahoma, 74018, and he sends you the device. Includes S+H.
I have no association with him and receive no compensation. I'm about to send for one myself.
