I am a new homeowner and need help choosing a tree for my backyard. The goal is to block the afternoon sun and create some shade. Would prefer something hardy and low maintenance. Also, would prefer something that will not be a real slow grower.

Thanks,
Homey

My faves would be:

Texas Ash, Bur Oak, Shantung Maple. All are fast growers, yet a strong long-lived trees.

There are trees that grow faster, but are short lived, weak, and susceptible to any number of ailments.

I just had my Shantung Maple planted this year and have been really impressed with how well its done already. The tree seems like a slightly larger Japanese Maple. The leaves are very attractive. It may be difficult to locate one of substantial size in this area, but I purchased one from Shades of Green in Frisco. I highly recommend this tree.
