Here's the low down: I had a house built on a lot that is 100' x 500' - the house sits basically in the middle of the lot and 200' from the road. The septic system consists of two 500 gallon tanks with a sprinkler line that runs to the back of the lot, and has two sprinkler heads that automatically disperses the treated water. This gives me 50' on both sides of that water line. My first question is: What is a safe distance to plant Shumard Red Oak trees from that line? The second question is: What is a safe distance to plant the same type tree from the 500 gallon septic tanks, and the third question is: What is a safe distance to plant the same type tree from the underground electric line that exists in the front yard?

Sorry for the intrusion. For some silly reason - I thought this might be a place to get some input.

Welcome to the Organic Forum. Great to see a 'True American Native' poster. I am sorry I do not have an answer to your question. If you hang around for a little while someone will have an answer. I wanted to be the first to welcome you.

Wah doh Greg.....the answer, as I have been told is as follows: The diameter of the root system will be very closely related to the size of the tree's canopy.....if the tree has a thirty foot canopy, then it would be reasonably safe to plant the tree a little more than fifteen foot from whatever object is in question....and of course, a time element comes into play as well....how long would it take a two inch diameter Red Oak to mature to include a thirty foot canopy......at my current age, well, I'll probably be staring at grub worms on a daily basis by then.......

WhiteHawk,
I have heard that the tree roots are actually more than 3 times further out than the canopy. I have exactly the same situation and I have decided that there are tree roots everywhere anyway. If the above is true, no trees could be planted anywhere near a home that has septic system. I think that the modern septic and electric lines will be able to keep the roots from invading. Especially a good tree like a red oak. Kent

Kent....I appreciate your input....after giving my newfound suggestion some thought - I found myself wondering the same thing.....a fruitless mulberry was my example...those roots extend forever it seems....I initially went with a 25 foot distance from the water lines and septic, but that put me in a position where I only had 25 feet on each side of the lot to plant trees.....that just doesn't look natural, and "natural" is my goal.....I've looked around at some older homes in the Denton area, and found many that have very large Red Oak, Live Oak, Bur Oak, etc. growing within ten or fifteen feet of the house. So, I'm with you my friend....the water line I don't think will present a problem....it's the septic tanks that hold most of my concern......and it's the least little bit of doubt that tends to paralyze me from doing anything.....I tend to want someone to validate or disprove my concerns, and offer their thoughts on the subject before I make a move.......I guess I'm kinda funny that way.
