i planted a small elm tree in my backyard about a week ago. the tree is about 5 feet tall. yesterday, i came home from work and when i went out back, i saw my poor tree. one of my dogs ripped the bark off the bottom of the tree  the bark is taken off about 1 foot of the tree. will my tree die? i stacked up bricks around the bottom of the tree to keep my dog from chewing on it anymore....

How thick is the tree stem?

Is just the bark removed, or is the wood beneath badly mauled?

I would use some peroxide to clean it, then apply tree trunk goop for a few weeks, checking for improvement as the goop is changed from time to time.

If the damage is too deep, the tree isn't going to be able to recover from this. This is another case where spray-feeding trees and shrubs, especially smaller ones, with organic compounds that include garlic/pepper tea is helpful. Fido woul only need to taste a plant that was doused with habanero once before fido found something else to do.

I think The Ent gave you some great advice.
Here's the bottom line, you don't have a choice but to do everything possible to save the tree. Maybe it's just not worth your time and you could easily go out and buy another but I think having little experiments in the garden like this are fun and interesting. I hope you will try to save it.
