The skin on my squash out of my garden in Weatherford, Tx is so tough I think it would stop a .50 cal. round.

Anyone know what might cause this condition? They're not edible unless peeled.

I pick them when they are 3"-4" so they should be tender. Could it be the soil? It's a red clay soil. Or, perhaps the brand of seeds I purchased? Or what?

Interesting, this happened to me, but I thought it was because I let them get a little too big. I couldn't even cut them. I ended up chopping them up with a cleaver and feeding them to the chickens. They love the seeds.

Don't know what the deal is...
