I have read that you should not top dress your lawn with compost in the summer. Why is that?

I also have a sort of related question. Whenever I get coffee grounds I spread them on my lawn in a very thin layer. The areas I have done this to are somewhat bare due to installation of a sprinkler system and they seem to be improving, plus I like the smell. Is there any reason I shouldn't do this in the summer?

Hi Ziggy,
You said you read that. Can you find it again? Maybe there was some overriding context that would change the recommendation for a certain situation. I see no reason why not to top dress with compost.

Coffee grounds make an excellent, free, year-round fertilizer.

Now I can't find where I read it, but I don't think there was any explanation.

Thanks for your opinion, I will continue to use coffee grounds as I get them.
