My girlfriend's boss said she has "thousands" of swarming bees in her back yard. She called somebody to poison them and she said they dropped dead immediately. What do you suppose they used, and does anybody have a better idea? Does anyone know what was going on with the bees? I didn't see it myself, but I would like to know what to say if anyone else ever has this problem.

Gee...I have always wanted to attract bees to my yard! It sounds like her exterminator was using an extra-lethal agent - like chlorpyrifos, carbaryl, or acephates..(Lorsban, Sevin or Orthene, commercially). This is swarm season for bees and other social insects. Mason bees swarms are not as prominent as honeybees or Africanized bees..
I am sure that if someone has a problem with bees that there is some other way to re-locate or deal with the bees. I have never had a problem with them.

Usually bees will swarm until they find a new home. Most likely their former hive site was disturbed and they were in the process of locating a new residence. It is sad that the bees were so quickly killed without giving them time to move on.

As far as killing them, before I decided I wouldn't do it anymore, I took bees out of the air with just soapy water. Hopefully whatever poison the exterminators used isn't MORE harmful (but it probably will be) than the bees would have been if left alone.

Kathe :(

Had a friend that had a hive locate in his sprinkler control box. Bee person came and removed the hive, but killed the rest of the bees with Sevin. It takes pretty toxic chemical stuff to kill bees.
