I noticed something the last few nights while sleeping with the bedroom windows open. About 3a-4am a single bird (sometimes mockingbirds or cardinals) will burst out into song. They'll be the only one singing; most of the time they'll sing for a minute or so then all quiet again. Just wonder what makes them do that?

It may be that they are just staking claim to their territory, saying I am here this morning, no need for anyone to start moving in, I am still here. I have read that one of the reasons male's sing early in the morning is to remind potential competitors they are in place and on watch, so stay out of their territory.

This sounds so familiar! For years now, in the spring, a mockingbird will sit in the crepe myrtle about 5 ft. in front of our bedroom window and sing his heart out! He does this between 2am-4am and wakes us every time. It lasts 1-2 weeks once he starts. His repertoire lasts anywhere from 15-20 minutes, and to be honest, it's fascinating to hear all the different bird songs he's "mocking". Sometimes he'll stop and repeat an hour later. He'll do this for a week or two, and I miss it when he stops, but often throughout the rest of the year we'll hear the songs throughout the neighborhood.
