Hello all... I am new to gardening and just planted my garden a couple weeks ago. While planting, I noticed only earthworms. My soil is very healthy and organic. Everything was going beautifully... However, just a couple days ago, after examing some of my plants, like cilantro, and noticing that certain stems were turning brown, I noticed slugs. I have put CedarCide around and will probably get some sluggo as well. However... I'm just so perplexed... where do these guys come from? Nearly all of my herbs are being attacked by them. :(

What do you think about using beer in saucers? The slugs love the stuff and I guess they die thinking they're happy. :?

Yes, that method works great. You can also use DE and hot ground up pepper. Hand picking at night is also very effective especially for snails.

I deter slugs (those that the chickens cannot get to - in the unfenced front - by using the thorny pruning bits from pruning the roses and the "spiky mine" looking burrs from my neighbor's elm tree as mulch. The sharp points keep the slimy critters out...this maneuver also seems to keep the neighborhood cats from using my borders as a litter box.
