New to the forum. My question is concerning splash blocks at downspout locations. A few of our downspouts are located in our beds. With the recent thunderstorms, the water is flowing at such force that mulch and compost are beginning to wash away. What are my options? Should I replace the splash blocks with 4" or so riverbed rocks which my slow the progress of the water at the beds? Please help. :(

That's essentially what I've done for the downspouts that empty into my beds. It helps a bit but heavy rains will still wash out my mulch layer, albeit not nearly as much. Had I more rock to use I think this approach would be a lot more effective. Ultimately I'm planning on collecting all of my roof runoff into three cisterns for use in the garden and to eliminate the washout from gutters.

I like Dave's idea of collecting rainwater. Austin and San Antonio are into this more than we are in north Texas.
Another option is to buy an expanding hose that attaches to your downspout. It stays coiled up but when it rains the weight of the water uncoils it and gently distributes the rainwater. The big box stores have them but try Rhodes or Green Mama's or Redenta's first.
