I didn't call the show on Sunday, but I heard the caller mention that he had experienced some damage on his Bald Cypress this spring from Wood Peckers. Howard mentioned that this was fairly uncommon, but I had the same problem a couple of weeks ago.

Apparently, one of these guys decided he really liked my tree and began to put small holes about halfway up the tree. I think the tree will be ok, but it was a little frustrating nonetheless. We have quite a large bird population due to beavers damming up a nearby creek, which has produced a nice wildlife habitat. I also recently installed a bird feeder which has attracted ALOT of birds.

The tree seems healthy otherwise. I also had removed about 8 inches of soil off the root flair a few years ago.

I would post a picture of the root flare, but the forum won't allow me to post another pic.

You can see the grayish remains of the tree goop that I had put over the holes, which has since washed off. I also tied some metal pie tins around this area which seemed to stop any more damage.
