I know that June is the month (for Texas anyway) for the 2nd major fertilization for turf. I've been totally organic for 4-5 years now and in the last year my lawn took a turn for the worst. This spring, most of my bermuda was over run by a dozen different kind of weeds.

I took advise and kept the lawn cut low, so to kill off some of the weeds and I applied green sand, molasses, Texas Tee and compost to my lawn.

The bermuda is making a comback and things are looking better. Should I make the same application again or is there a better recommendation on what this month's treatment should be? Please help.

Howard recommends fertilizing three times a year - Late winter, June, and the end of summer. I'm going to try it this year and see what happens. Although I have professed one fertilization per year, this year I've seen my yard is greener in the places where I've recently used corn meal to treat for fungus.

Greensand is sand and doesn't wear out, get eaten, or dissolve - at least as far as has been explored. If it does wear out, it's not very fast. I wouldn't consider another dose of that for at least 5 years.

Molasses wears out quickly. You can redo molasses every 2 weeks if you want to. Now is certainly good.

Texas Tee, if I'm not mistaken, contains feather meal. Feather meal takes a l-o-o-ong time to decompose. I would think if you applied it already this year, you would still be seeing the benefit from it.

So after reviewing the materials, here's what I would do if it were my lawn. I don't think we know enough about the differences in the value of the products to give you a great recommendation. So, mentally divide your lawn into two halves. Spray molasses on one half and scatter Texas Tee on the other half. Then come back in a month and let us know which was the correct thing to do. I'm going to do that with corn meal and I'll let y'all know.

Also we need to know where you live. If you live in Brownsville the answer might be different than if you live in San Francisco.

One nice thing about organic lawn care is your windows of fertilizer/amendment application are not set in stone. I do apply a June fertilization, but my Spring application is in February.

As for specific amendments for your next application, as your budget allows. A light application of compost is always welcome. Dried Molasses is also a good to feed the sweet tooth of those microbes. Depending on your soil makeup, you could probably omit the GreenSand. You could replace the GreenSand with LavaSand if you haven't added some already. I like the MaestroGro Texas Tee, but there are other options if you want to give your lawn a variety.
