I seem to recall Howard discussing natural human lice remedies, but didn't pay attention at the time. Now I need the details and haven't found them so far. I'm going to try 50 drops of tea tree essential oil to 2 oz. of warmed olive oil. I was wondering if anyone else out there was aware of any other organic-type remedies that have worked for them. :? :(

Vinegar works fine. The tea tree/olive oil mix should work too, but I seem to recall that it doesn't work on nits, just adults, so you'd have to do it again to kill off the nits or comb them all out. I haven't checked the link referred to above but I'll get it has both these items in it.

Here is a very good recipe for head lice - there is more information at http://antiagingchoices.com/Aromatherap ... d_lice.htm

Both lice and eggs are quite hard to see and can be difficult to remove. Tea tree oil kills lice, but not their eggs, so it must be used regularly until all the eggs have either hatched or been removed. Although the tea tree remedy requires more persistence than commercial chemical treatments, it actually improves the quality of the hair rather than damaging it.
At the start of an outbreak use a 2-3 per cent tea tree oil shampoo on a daily basis to prevent contamination. Shampoo and Hair Care - A 3-4 percent dilution of tea tree is common in commercial tea tree shampoos and soaps. Otherwise buy a good, neutral pH value shampoo and add your own tea tree to it: to a 100 ml bottle add about 60 drops. This disinfects the hair and is good for the prevention and/or cure of dandruff and lice. An alcohol-based scalp rub can be made by adding 5 ml of tea tree to 100ml of vodka - this can be used to rid the hair of fleas and lice (but note that alcohol should not be used on irritate skin).

Another tip for lice prevention is eating a garlic pearl once a day.

If lice or eggs are found on the hair, make up an alcohol-based scalp rub by adding 5 ml of tea tree to 25 ml of vodka mixed with 75 ml water - leave on for at least an hour (overnight if possible), then wash out. Finally, comb the hair carefully with a fine toothed comb. Use this preparation at the start of an infestation and repeat every 3 days until the condition has cleared up. Two or three applications will usually do the trick! (Replace the alcohol/water mix with a vegetable oil if the skin becomes irritated).

Between treatments, wash the hair daily (if possible) with a 2-3 percent tea tree shampoo - leave on for 10 minutes before washing out. In addition add a little tea tree oil to the conditioner or final rinse water.

To prevent re-infection, wash all combs and brushes in water to which a few drops of tea tree oil have been added. Teach your child and the adults to brush or comb the hair very thoroughly, morning and night. Lice are not so strong that they can survive a vigorous brushing. Use one of the following essential oils in a shampoo or as an addition to the rinsing water when washing the hair. Rosemary, geranium, lavender, eucalyptus and lemon. You could use a drop of one of these oils in a leave in conditioner.

Then using a fine tooth comb, gently comb, wiping the comb between each sweep through the hair. Comb the hair in one inch sections. If the hair is long, you'll need to use clips to separate the hair. When you have combed the whole head, wash the hair with a gently baby shampoo. Then use the following rinse.

Get Rid of Lice: This is a real killer blend, so use it carefully and be sure to keep it out of your eyes. Testing a tiny dab on the skin first, especially on children, is a good idea to make sure that it does no9t burn or cause skin reactions. This recipe calls for coating your hair with vegetable oil, which smothers the lice and prevents them from making a made dash to get away from the essential oils. Be prepared that the oil isn't easy to wash out of your hair. You probably need to shampoo your head a couple times, and even then it will feel a little greasy. (in case it make you feel better about having greasy hair, the vegetable oil, especially olive oil, actually makes a very good hair-conditioning treatment, especially if your hair tends to be dry or spit easily.)

Yield: 2 ounces anti-lice treatment
20 drops tea tree
10 drops rosemary
10 drops thyme (because thyme can burn your scalp, use the linalol type which is effective without getting too hot)
5 drops lavender
2 ounces vegetable oil.
Combine ingredients
Apply the oil to dry hair, cover with a plastic bag or shower cap, and then wrap your head in a towel. (comb your hair well before dosing it with oil. Otherwise, you can end up with a tangle mess.)
After 1 hour, shampoo your hair without wetting it first to help remove the oil. Rinse and shampoo again (If your scalp feels irritated before the time is up, go ahead and wash it out right away.)
Lice eggs are every resistant, so repeat this treatment in a week and then again in 2 weeks to destroy any newly hatched lice.
Tip: In between treatments, do a preventative hair rinse. You can make this by adding the same number of drops called for in the recipe to 1 cup vinegar. To rinse your hair, shake the vinegar mix well. Then add 1/4 cup of it to 1 cup water and use this as your final hair rinse, making sure that you rib it well into your scalp. Lightly rinse with water.
Scalp Calm: If your child's scalp become irritated because of the biting and possible infection, make up the following:
1 tsp jojoba oil
1 drop chamomile German
2 drops lavender
Apply directly onto the scalp with your fingertips. Gently separate the hair into sections, so you can read the whole scalp.
