I saw a pair of soaring Red-tailed Hawks the other day, which reminded me of something I read about their nesting behavior.

Some Red-tailed Hawks seem to mate for life, but they like their independence too.

Northern populations will migrate south for the winter, but they take a break from each others company.

They nest and raise their young, then head south, independent of each other. In the spring, they head north again, meet at the previous year's nest site, say hello, and produce another brood.
