I'm in Dallas, and have a large 30+ year old red oak that just dropped most of its acorns last week. This tree has not done this for the 8 years I've been here, it usually has (and had) a large quantity of acorns that drop in the Fall.

The acorns are very small, caps attached. The tree is not showing any other changes, leaves still look good and green. I have not seen any pest or disease signs. Nothing that I know of has changed.

Has anyone else experienced this? The squirrels will not be happy this year.

We had some high winds a couple of weeks ago, do you suppose that had an impact? In my neighborhood we lost a lot of leaves and old branches.

On an unrelated note, my dogs love eating acorns, and those little ones are like munching m&ms for them. :)

We didn't see weather that bad. No leaves or branches down, nothing under the oak except baby acorns. We are finally getting Summer temps, so I could reason the tree needing to drop some nuts after having too many from the mild Spring we had, but not this quantity. You have to search to find any remaining acorns. Previous years the limbs are heavy with them, even with the hot and dry weather.

There is a lot of difference in acorn crops from one year to the next, just like with other fruits and nuts, and it can vary widely within a small region (i.e., a part of a city or county). The pecans in my neighborhood have a bumper crop every few years, and some years almost nothing. You might want to walk around your area and see if the other trees are behaving in a similar way before deciding if there is anything there actually to respond to.
