I recently moved into a house that has a very mature live oak (cool tree!). I've never taken care of this kind of tree before and I hear they benefit from regular prunings. Is this myth? Fact? How regular?

You will hear of and see trees being pruned regular basis. 99% of the time this is harmful to the tree and helpful only to the aesthetic eye of the beholder.
The only recommended pruning is dead wood, limbs hitting objects (car, roof, you) and limbs rubbing against each other, which might cause two limbs to die vs one.
If the tree could talk it would say, "I am right in the middle of this photosynthesis project and I need all the leaves and branches I have grown to continue".
I thank you and the tree will thank you silently.
