When is the best time to prune dead wood from a red oak and from a live oak tree in North Dallas County?

If the wood is dead you can prune it anytime, it's like cutting your fingernails, the tree can't feel it. Having said that, if you have to go back to a live portion of the tree to cut it at a branch collar, you should wait till after the first couple of frosts when the tree is dormant. If you don't know what a collar is go to the Channel 8 TV segments on the home page of this site or ask another question here.

Best time to prune live wood for pretty much any tree (except some fruit trees) is after dormancy sets in after the frosts start, as Tony said. Deadwood can be done any time. For Apple, Peach, etc trees, you want to prune just before bud break in spring, but do soonly where really needed.
