How does one reduce the size of a banana tree/plant that has grown enormous? It's over 15 foot tall and planted by my pool.

What do I do with the plant during winter?

I can't tell you from my own experience but can share a story told to me by a friend. She had the same situation as you and decided to just cut them back to around a foot tall and mulched the heck out of them. She waited until it was cold and the plant was dying back anyway, then whacked it down. Her plants grew back better than ever and she plans to do this every few years from now on. Hope this is helpful to you.

What KK said - I had some of these near my pool and they do fine over the winter if you mulch the heck out of them to keep those roots warm.

Caution - they seem to grow out of control when exposed to Jimmy Buffet and boat drinks - a major problem near my pool.

I'm a new guy around here and I've been catching up on reading posts. I've read some of yours, particularly persuasive was the one about "arguing" a position. And now this!

I knew there was a reason I liked your ideas.
