Can someone please explain to me the purpose of rye grass? I have bare spots in my yard that I need to get something growing but I was told that it is too late to put bermuda down (like the rest of the yard.) Any insight here? Or could I still put down sod if I was able to find it?

Many thanks Christina

Annual rye grass is a cool season grass that (theoretically!) lives for only one year. It is very fast growing and fast sprouting so people use it two ways - to get rapid turf on a new lawn or dead spots while waiting for desirable grasses to sprout or, here in the south, to have a nice green lawn all winter. Some folks use a perennial rye that comes back each fall.

You can sod now but the sod won't really grow or root well this fall, Bermuda likes to see 80+ and a lot of sunshine to really take off and we are fixin to get chilly.

If it were my yard, I'd either wait til Spring and then sod or plant annual rye for the winter, feed it good (get your organic program going too) and then plant Bermuda seed in Spring.

The annual rye dying off and rotting loosens the soil nicely and leaves nice channels for water/nutrients to get into the soil.

I would however suggest waiting til your Husband is in a good mood before breaking that "Gee honey, you get to mow all winter" news to him :-)

My husband mows? Who saw him do that? I want photos for bribery material! The only mowing he does is his dinner plate after working really long hard days to pay the lawn guy to do our yard.

Hugs,
Christina

WOW! I thought I was the only one who had a husband that didn't mow. The problem is, I won't let him hire someone to do it because my theory is that if I have two able legs and a lawn mower, then there is no reason why we shouldn't do it. So, I end up doing the mowing. :x I'm a tight-wad too though.
