I bought a Magnolia tree two weeks ago and was gungho about finally having one. I received differing responses from Home Depot about how to transplant it. As I dug my hole two times wider than the root ball, I realized I have clay soil that really retained water. H.D. suggested peat moss, so I put two parts dirt to one part peat moss. After planting the tree, I watered it and added root stimulator. The water still hadn't drained several days later.

Is it too late to save this tree? Have I already drowned it?

If it survives, will the clay accommodate the roots?

I have a one year warranty. Will I know right away that my tree didn't make it? Should I go ahead and start all over?

What can I do to help the tree and the soil?

Thanks!

I am not big into trees as opposed to livestock and ranching but Howard has preached for years to never use peat moss and only fill the hole with with the dirt that you removed. I don't see why you can't go back and fix you tree. This would get rid of you trees "wet feet".
