Noticed our 15 year old 20+ foot red oak has bark damage on limbs close to trunk. One limb was removed which had bark completely gone from base of limb to 1 foot outward. Other limbs have similar beginnings. Other than that, the tree looks very healthy. Anyone know what may be causing this? Squirrels or disease? Treatment?

It doesn't sound good. You said otherwise than this it looks healthy - the leaves are full and a normal dark green?

Please post photos if you can, and tell us about the location of the tree. Does it get regular watering or fertilizer? How is the drainage in the area? Is your yard organic?
