I am trying to figure the best place to put my compost outside. As far as out of sight and convenience, the best place in my back yard looks like it's behind the air conditioning unit. However, before I could get someone to fix the leak in my AC, they kept adding freon from mid August to mid September. It leaked out completely twice before they fixed the leak Sept 21, less than a month ago. I've heard that freon is toxic to the soil and environment. Is this going to add toxins to my compost if I place my compost next to the AC unit that sits on the grround? Btw, my compost will be on top of the natural soil, not in a barrel.

Freon escapes into the air. It isn't good for the atmosphere but it won't do anything to your compost. Be careful piling anything too close around working machinery. And compost can spontaneously combust - it doesn't happen often, but I wouldn't put it close to a building. (It's the same reason you don't put wet hay in the barn.)

Thanks Northwesterner - very timely response, as I planned to start the compost outside today. I will pick a spot away from the AC or any other machinery.
Appreciate your feedback!
