There are many old pecan trees in our neighborhood (75 - 100+ yrs). There is some disease going around and our 2 trees are exhibiting these same symptoms. A small section of bark will appear as if it were stripped off down to bare wood underneath and the branch past that point will die off. You can see clumps of brown leaves in the trees where this has happened. We also have webworms but suspect this is somethign separate. What is causing the bark to strip off and what can I do about it?

Jeff,
I see that this is your first post to the board....Welcome.

Don't know if I can can help but need to ask a few questions to get a feel.
Because of age, that may be an indicator.

Were the trees part of an orchard at one time?
Has it been very dry over there West of Houston?
How often are the trees watered and how?
Can you describe the ground under the trees? Grass/lawn/mulched etc.?
When did the condition start?
Neighbors have the same problem? How near?
Have you reviewed Howard's Sick Tree Treatment segment?

Do a search for 'Pecan Trees' and all the related post will pop up and you might find the info you need there.

Perhaps with a little more info, a real 'treespert' will jump in.

.....it's possible. The subdibision is fairly large probably 2-3 miles square and the trees are dispersed all over the area. THere are a lot of pecans in the surrounding area and a number of pecan processing businesses, so its possible there were a number of orchards in this vicinity.

.....we had a couple of bad drought years in '98 and '99 and this year had been dry until around Claudette although we didn't get much from it but its been raining more 'normally' lately.

....the trees are quite large, about 20 and 30 inches respectively. There is a mulched flower bed under them about 25 feet across and the ground beyond that tends to be a bit lower and collects rain. The flower bed gets watered a couple times a week in the range of perhaps an inch each time and the surrunding lawn about the same. We moved in 5 years ago and the flower bed had been there for previous 4-5 years.

Neighbors have the same problem? How near?
.....I noticed it a year ago and its worse this year. I noticed it in other parts of the subdivision as much as 3 or 4 years ago and 1/2 to 1 mile away.

Have you reviewed Howard's Sick Tree Treatment segment? yes. I need to re-read to see how to apply to tress this large and in light of the surrounding flower bed (all sorts of plants).
