Hello,
I am new as of today to this site. I am a first time gardener in central texas and my question is about Broccoli. I planted plants from the nursery according to the Texas Ag. planting guide for central texas. My Broccoli heads did not get very large- approx 1=1.5 inch across before they began to flower out. What do I do? Do I cut the yellow flowers off? Will the plant form again to harvest? Thanks for your help and I could use all the expert advice I could get.

I'm not a real expert on broccoli, but here in North Texas I grow that one from late fall through the winter. I just pulled my plants - they were putting out a few florets, but mostly they had bolted (put out the flowers). The bees liked them, so I left them for a little while just to enjoy the yellow flowers. :)

I don't try to grow broccoli in the spring anymore. The life cycle of the pests seem to be in perfect harmony to gobble up my plants and the early heat makes it go to flower (bolt) early.

You can eat the flowers, but that plant is done for the year! It won't produce anything else you want to eat until fall.

Broccoli is a cole crop and should be planted in the fall in Texas. It is bolting because it's too warm. You can plant them all winter long in 2 week intervals and continually harvest to early spring.

I had a bizarre first experience with broccoli this year, and as a first time gardener, am clueless as to why. I grew Calabrese brocccoli, planted it in the spring, it had shade in the afternoons after 3 PM. It produced broccoli florest until 2 weeks ago, yes, August 1! I harvested 2-3" heads in June and July and the plants continued to give me 1-1 1/2" offshoots for another month until I finally pulled them out so I could prep for fall. Got any clues for me?? Thanks!!

It's an odd year. I will be putting in broccoli soon, I haven't had luck with it in hot months. You were very lucky!

What variety do you typically grow?

I don't remember - a very common variety. Pack-something? I'm not at home right now or I could tell you.

Kathleen - you were growing what is also known as broccoli rabe. It's an Italian broccoli that produces many small heads. I don't think you would have had the same luck with regular broccoli that produces one large head and only a few small ones.

No. I grew both Broccoli Raab as well as Broccoli Calabrese. The Calabrese gave me one large head, but not until the end of June-early July. Then they continued to produce smaller side shoots. The Raab produced lots of small shoots, but they were done by the end of June. ????

i had planted some broccoli late last winter for second planting. about 6 plants, ended up pulling all but one, can't say why just didn't. it has lasted all summer long actually growing but not putting a head on. very unusual as by late may/june the harlequin bugs have ate any kale crops i have had every year before now. curious to see what will happen come cooler weather.

Normally, you plant broccoli plant broccoli in late August, and every 2 weeks till mid-October. Once they give you the main head then the side florets you should pull them and compost them. They normally do not produce further. We had a super mild winter last year so keeping them through summer is not 'normal'. Same with Kale. They are cold season veggies.

I bought some plants a Calloways last year and had great production. So much better than store-bought.
