Please help me identify this tree. It was already planted when I moved in and is growing nicely.

Looks like a dogwood.

There is a test for plants in the cornus family: pick a leaf and you want to hold it between both thumbs and forefingers, pointy tip in one hand, stem in the other. You don't want to rip it, you want to carefully pull the leaf apart across the middle. think of a page of stamps you want to pull apart along the perforations - you pull carefully. As the sections pull, are there white fibers that are still intact at the veins while the green part is separated? Then you have a cornus family plant. I don't know which dogwood, but you have a start.
